Sometimes I get overwhelmed by the difficulty of an examined life. The trials and hardships of trying to live mindfully bruise and scrape at me and I start to wonder if it’s all too much trouble and wouldn’t it be easier to just sleepwalk through life or self-medicate?
Yes. Mindfulness is hard. Living an examined life is very hard. But the alternative is much tougher and more problematic. If I am at least attempting to live mindfully I have a chance (renewable each moment) for greater emotional balance, greater cognitive balance and greater clarity of heart and mind. Living mindfully also increases my relational intelligence so it makes me less of a pain in the ass to be around!
