Saint Francis and the Sow
April 10, 2009by galway kinnell

The bud
stands for all things,
even for those things that don’t flower,
for everything flowers, from within, of self-blessing;
though sometimes it is necessary
to reteach a thing its loveliness,
to put a hand on its brow
of the flower
and retell it in words and in touch
it is lovely
until it flowers again from within, of self-blessing;

as Saint Francis
put his hand on the creased forehead
of the sow, and told her in words and in touch
blessings of earth on the sow, and the sow
began remembering all down her thick length,
from the earthen snout all the way
through the fodder and slops to the spiritual curl of the tail,
from the hard spininess spiked out from the spine
down through the great broken heart
to the blue milken dreaminess spurting and shuddering
from the fourteen teats into the fourteen mouths sucking and blowing beneath
them:
the long, perfect loveliness of sow.

it never ceases to amaze me how the timing of these things can so coincide with one another… i click through and find this wonderful post after a few days of discussions with a friend about this very thing… which mostly began because a quote keeps being delivered to me from so many different sources…
“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” – Anais Lin
so many days i feel like the sow… where is the flower? … many times i want to curl up in the bud and hide myself away for i fail to see the blossom… and then, a word, a reminder…
“sometimes it is necessary to reteach a thing its loveliness” … so so true…
I love that quote by anais lin. And isn’t it so true? That day does come.
did a search for “buddha lotus” on google and your photograph came up first. It sent a little thrill through me… I created a stained glass piece in almost the exact image, several months ago. interesting, how the universe works. you can see the image at my blog, also on workpress: glasswench.wordpress.com, click on the pages at right “buddha & lotus”. Peace.
